If, like most of us, you have no real plans for Christmas Day, we would normally suggest you get a life. But if that feels a little ambitious right now, there is a very reasonable backup plan: spend Christmas debating with us.
DebaterVerse is running a special Christmas Day last man standing debate tournament for people who would rather argue ideas than sit around pretending to enjoy the day.
So what is this, exactly?
It is a one day British Parliamentary debate tournament with no preliminary rounds and no second chances. There are three elimination rounds, and only the best teams progress until a winner is crowned at the end.
What that actually means
We are starting with 16 teams split across 4 rooms.
In every round:
- The top 2 teams move on
- The bottom 2 teams are knocked out
By the final round, there is only one room left. That round decides:
- The Christmas Champion
- The Best Speaker, chosen by a vote from the judges in the final
How it plays out
- Round 1: 16 teams, 4 rooms
Top 2 teams in each room advance - Round 2: 8 teams, 2 rooms
Top 2 teams in each room advance - Round 3: 4 teams, 1 final room
Winner and Best Speaker announced
All debates will follow British Parliamentary rules. Anything not specific to this tournament will follow the most recent WUDC Debating and Judging Manual.
